Live and work from Spain with full legal certainty
If you work remotely for a foreign company or carry out your professional activity online, Spain offers you the opportunity to legally reside as a digital nomad.
This permit is designed for international professionals who wish to enjoy Spain’s quality of life without giving up their work abroad. In addition, you can include your family members in the application.
So-called digital nomads may be either employees or self-employed professionals, provided they are authorized by their companies or clients to carry out their work remotely from Spain.
At Ruiz Ruiz Abogados-Lawyers, we analyze each applicant’s situation, as well as that of their family members, in order to verify compliance with the requirements established in Law 14/2013 of 27 September, on support for entrepreneurs and their internationalization, which regulates the visa and residence authorization for international remote workers (digital nomads).
Basic General Requirements
- Demonstrate an employment or professional relationship with the company for at least three months prior to the application.
- The company you work for or collaborate with must have been actively operating for at least one year.
- Hold an academic degree related to the position or have at least three years of experience performing the duties of the role.
- Have explicit authorization from the company to work remotely.
- Provide proof of sufficient financial means, including salary, monthly income, or other sources of income. The required amount will depend on the number of family members included in the application.
Types of Permits and Duration
Visa
If the applicant is outside Spain, they may apply for a visa valid for up to one year, unless the work period is shorter, in which case the visa will be granted for that duration.
The application must be submitted to Spanish Diplomatic Missions or Consular Offices (Embassies or Consulates).
After this period, it will be necessary to apply for the corresponding residence authorization.
Residence Authorization
If the applicant is already legally in Spain, they may apply for a residence permit valid for three years, allowing them to live and work throughout the entire national territory.
The application is submitted to the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE).
Important Aspects
This authorization does not require a minimum annual stay in Spain for renewal. However, it is essential to comply with all tax and Social Security obligations in Spain in order to renew the permit.
